If you wanted to say something different at the time you said it, you should say "What I wanted to say was " If you've later reconsidered what you said and now wish you had said it differently, you should say "What I should have said is ".

Note that this is in past tense: you say "I wanted to ___" instead of "I want to ___". There's no grammatical reason for making it past tense; it just makes your sentence sound more polite. When you say it this way, it sounds like an explanation for why you're calling, why you're visiting, etc.

Sep 18,  · "I just wanted to say 'Hello' mate!" An Amazon delivery driver had to leap over a customer's fence in California to escape a dog - before he realized the stone English mastiff (around 81 kg or lb) giant just wanted to say "hello".

Dec 03,  · Americans they want to be different, they use 'wanted' instead of 'want' for present time. For instance, 'I wanted to say I am grateful to you' American English grammar is slightly different from Standard English. They love to use subjunctives too.

If you wanted to, you could replace it with "really", "mainly", "primarily", or a whole slew of other adverbs. You could also restructure your approach. As stated in comment above, you could just get straight to the point, as, "Would you be interested in obtaining a large metal drum today?", or "I've looked into that collection, and found ABC.".
